Eight conditions, three binary variables. A cube keeps one readout valid on conditions it never saw. Points in general position (a random cloud) let a readout solve almost every split, and that readout does not transfer.
Shattering – · CCGP context – · decoding context – · held-out pair –
Filled bars and the colored numbers are CCGP. Outline bars and the grey numbers are decoding: a readout fitted on trials from all eight conditions and tested on held-out trials of the same conditions, so it never has to transfer. The black line is shattering. The dashed line is chance. On the map, each condition is named as in the task, image and outcome (+ juice, − nothing): red is context 1, blue is context 2, and gold joins a pair that differs only in context. The map's horizontal axis is a context readout fitted on the six filled conditions; the two hollow ones were held out. The grey line is its boundary: red belongs to its right, blue to its left. The vertical axis shows action and reward and, once the cube bends, the direction in which the gold segments differ, so in the cube they are horizontal and parallel. The inset shows how the eight means spread over directions; the participation ratio is about 3 for the cube and 7 in general position.
