A simple cell in cat visual cortex

A light bar changes position and orientation while an electrode records one neuron.

Clicks make recorded electrical events audible.

The response depends on where the bar falls and how it is oriented.

Cat V1, one neuron, one electrode: the classical method. The macaque IT recordings come next.

Text description

The film shows a projected light bar on a screen. The experimenter moves the bar and marks locations of responses. The recording is played as a sequence of clicks. The demonstration illustrates selectivity for stimulus position and orientation, rather than a response determined solely by the presence of light. This is an original historical recording, not the synthetic waveform used in the preceding diagram.

Torsten Wiesel explains the historical experiments (iBiology; transcript available).
